Magnum P.I. Casting Search Continues despite Selleck Wanting Back in the Magnum Driver’s Seat
Tom Selleck has launched a campaign to star in the movie version of his hit U.S. TV show Magnum P.I. - because studio bosses have yet to approach him to revive the role.
The 64-year-old actor starred as Thomas Magnum, a private investigator living in tropical Hawaii, in the 1980s series - one of the highest-rated shows on American television during its eight year run.
And Selleck is baffled that film chiefs have yet to tap him to revisit the role he made famous, insisting fans are pleading for his return.
He says, "They haven't called, they haven't written. I keep hearing they're developing one but I don't know whether I'm going to be in it... but they keep doing (fan) polls, and I keep winning them."
Producer Brian Grazer has dismissed the rumor that Matthew McConaughey will play the lead in the upcoming Magnum P.I. movie adaptation, produced by his company, Imagine Entertainment. With a script and director Rawson Thurber (Dodgeball) already on board, casting has been the project's biggest problem. Grazer told MTV: "I think the idea for 'Magnum P.I.' is to find a counterpoint, to not try and find the new Tom Selleck but to find someone that is just so different that you go, oh my God! That guy is Magnum?!?
“In terms of timeline, the film is, essentially, a genesis story. It’s Magnum Begins. When we meet Magnum, he’s not yet a private investigator, but by the time the story ends, he’s hung up his shingle. I’m working through a first draft now, and it’s been so much fun — currently Magnum and TC are bickering in a sugar cane field that’s been lit ablaze by the bad guys. It’s going to be an unapologetically great action movie. That’s a promise.”

Then & Now
Tom Selleck has launched a campaign to star in the movie version of his hit TV Series MAGNUM P.I. – because studio bosses have yet to approach him to revive the role. The 65 year old actor starred as Thomas Magnum, a private investigator living in tropical Hawaii, in the 1980s series – one of the highest-rated shows on American television during its eight year run.
With a script and director Rawson Thurber (Dodgeball) already on board, casting has been the projects biggest problem. Grazer told MTC: “I think the idea for “Magnum P.I.” is to find a counterpoint, to not try and find the new Tom Selleck but to find someone that is just so different that you go, oh my God! OUR GOAL: To have younger and modern versions of the original cast of the MAGNUM P.I. TV Series work together for the same common goal: Getting themselves cast in the upcoming MAGNUM P.I. Movie.
OUR DREAM: To have Tom Selleck, Larry Manetti, Roger Mosley, and John Hillerman mentor their possible protégé’s with the goal of having Mike Bennett, David Attar, Duane Patterson play younger versions of their modern day characters Thomas Magnum, Rick, TC, and Higgins respectively in the MAGNUM P.I. Movie by mentoring them as they recreate (rehearse and film) a variety of scenes from the original MAGNUM P.I. Pilot Script “Don’t Eat The Snow In Hawaii.”

MIKE BENNETT is the spitting image of a young Tom Selleck… except for the fact that he’s 402 pounds. He is an aspiring Canadian actor who makes his living as a licensed Private Investigator and Night Club Bouncer as he seeks his big break. In early in 2006 it was announced that Executive Producer Brian Grazer (Imagine Entertainment: THE DAVINCI CODE, A BEAUTIFUL MIND) was going make Magnum P.I. - The Movie.
Producers of the upcoming "Magnum P.I." feature film were firm that Tom Selleck would not reprise the role for the Big Screen, despite his public interest. The film has been in development hell but there have been rumors that the producers have considered everyone from Ben Affleck, to Matthew McConaughey, and Nicholas Cage for the role of Thomas Magnum. This makes Mike Bennett sick to his stomach. Tom Selleck is his hero and the role of Magnum belongs to him. But if Tom can’t have it then Mike honestly feels it should be him, despite the fact he has never had a professional acting role with more than a few lines of dialogue.
“Since the MAGNUM P.I. Movie is going to be a genesis story about how Thomas becomes MAGNUM, P.I. it only makes sense that Tom Selleck, Roger Mosley, and Larry Manetti play modern day versions of their characters from the 1980s TV Series reflecting back upon when they first met and have David, Duane, and myself play younger versions of them in the Movie, which would keep the fans of the TV Series happy, while allowing David, Duane, and myself to be in the Movie.”
For the BECOMING MAGNUM – REALITY Web Series we could have Tom, Roger, and Larry share with each of us, their perspectives about the characters that they each made infamous while we each document our own personal journey’s as we go through the preparation of getting ready for the roles.
The cameras will follow Mike and his 2 friends David Attar and Duane Patterson on their obsessive journey as Mike attempts to lose 140 lbs, they sharpen their acting skills by rehearsing, performing, and filming scenes from the original “Magnum, P.I.” Pilot Script, “Don’t Eat The Snow In Hawaii” while Mike continues to work as a Private Investigator and Night Club Bouncer. Our 3 heroes will be taking Navy Seal training once Mike has lost enough weight, and solicit Brian Grazer for a screen test for the “Magnum, P.I.” Movie.
Experts in the fields of Medicine, Fitness, and Nutrition will monitor and supervise Mike’s quest to safely lose 140 lbs. As the weight comes off, Mike and two of his Acting buddy’s will begin training with a, a 7th Degree Black Belt in Combat Jujutsu instructor in Hand-to-Hand Tactical Combat to fully develop the Navy Seal side of Thomas Magnum, Rick, and T.C.
We will also follow David, Duane, and Mike. into the classroom as they study the craft of acting through a variety of acting workshops, scene study and audition classes, as well as on professional auditions. They will be mentored by a top Hollywood Producer who has made over $1 Billion at the Box Office as he mentors them on how to negotiate their acting careers through Hollywood.
We will also film iconic scenes from the Pilot Script of the Magnum, P.I. TV Series throughout the course of Mike’s weight loss transformation. Perhaps this footage will be the calling card they need when approaching Brian Grazer. Mike will also seek out Tom Selleck to get his assistance in preparing for the role, and to get his blessing.
We all have crazy dreams of emulating the success of our favorite actor, rock star, athlete or hero from whatever realm turns our crank. BECOMING MAGNUM is a light hearted and comedic DIY “REALITY” Web Series with a great character journey we can all relate to, whether we want to admit it or not. Will Mike Bennett actually get cast as Magnum? Not bloody likely! But he truly believes he can do it and it’s his incredible dedication to this idea that makes him so compelling and makes us want to see him succeed.
BECOMING MAGNUM will be produced by Gemini Award-winning Ken Craw (Ben Johnson, Drugs & the Quest for Gold, Girls Don’t Fight) and directed and produced by Michael Hamilton (Season’s Pass, The Millenials).

Personal Trainer and Professional Fitness Competitor, Ocean Bloom will train our Heroes, David Attar, Duane Patterson, and Mike Bennett, in the Gym. Top Canadian Nutrition Expert, Brad King will be helping Mike put together a Nutritional Plan, as well as providing Mike with a 1 Year Supply of Brad’s own personally formulated brand of dietary supplements (Ultimate Male) to help him lose his goal of 140+ lbs in order to get in shape for the ‘Possible’ role of Thomas Magnum in the upcoming Magnum, P.I. Movie.
